Large fire breaks out on High Street in Walthamstow in East London

Firefighters and other emergency services in East London are at the scene of a large fire on High Street in Walthamstow, local officials and witnesses say. Three families have been forced to leave their home. (more)

The incident began just before midnight on Wednesday when a large fire was reported at a building close to the Lidl supermarket. One witness said the fire appeared to have involved the Arabian Nights restaurant, which is close to Lidl.

Crowds of people were seen gathering on the streets as a large fire could be seen burning in the background. The fire was later brought under control and there were no immediate reports of any casualties or missing people.

"There are no casualties," Walthamstow Member of Parliament Stella Creasy said on her Twitter account at 2:20 a.m. "Bad news is there are three families who need somewhere to stay. Can anyone help?"

There was no official confirmation about which building or buildings were on fire or what may have caused the blaze, which came just 24 hours after a fire engulfed a tower block in west London, killing at least 12 people and injuring 79 others.

Walthamstow is located in the London Borough of Waltham Forest.
