Police and other emergency services in Ohio are at the scene of a shooting outside Affinity Hospital in Massillon, officials say. One person has been killed in what appears to have been an attempted murder-suicide targeting a doctor.
The incident happened just after 2 p.m. on Monday when officers were called to reports of an active shooter, but details about the specific circumstances were not immediately available. It happened in the parking lot of the medical center, which is located in Stark County.
People in the area reported hearing about six gunshots.
Police confirmed that a doctor had been shot by the gunman in an apparent murder-suicide. Both were taken inside the hospital for treatment, after which the suspect succumbed to his injuries. The doctor was undergoing surgery for serious injuries.
There was no immediate word on a possible motive.
All Massillon Schools were briefly put on lockdown as a precaution, but all students and staff are safe as the incident did not happen on school property. District buses are running about 30 minutes behind schedule as a result of the lockdown.
"The Massillon City School District took immediate action and placed each building in lockdown for precautionary measures," the district said in a statement. "Police have now notified that it is safe to come out of lockdown. In no circumstance were any of our students or staff in jeopardy."
