Trump endorses U.S. Senate candidate Roy Moore despite allegations

U.S. President Donald Trump has endorsed Roy Moore for next week's Senate election despite allegations of sexual misconduct, telling his supporters that the Republican Party needs his vote to pass critical legislation. (more)

"Democrats refusal to give even one vote for massive Tax Cuts is why we need Republican Roy Moore to win in Alabama," Trump said on Twitter on Monday. "We need his vote on stopping crime, illegal immigration, Border Wall, Military, Pro Life, [Veterans Affairs], Judges 2nd Amendment and more."

Trump and the White House had previously expressed their opposition against Democratic opponent Doug Jones, but Monday's tweet marked the first time that Trump called on his supporters to back Moore in the wake of allegations of sexual misconduct. Moore has denied the allegations.

"No to Jones, a Pelosi/Schumer Puppet!", Trump's tweet added, referring to Democratic leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer.

Voters in Alabama will head to the polls on December 12 to pick a permanent replacement for Jeff Sessions, who resigned in early February to serve as U.S. Attorney General. The race was thrown into the national spotlight when several women accused Moore of sexual misconduct.

A CBS News poll released on Sunday found that 71 percent of Alabama Republicans believe the allegations against Moore are false, and those who do overwhelming believe Democrats and the media are behind the allegations. Moore has a lead over Jones, 49 to 43 percent, among likely voters.
