Police in upstate New York are at the scene of a shooting at an apartment complex in Ellenville in Ulster County, local officials and witnesses say. Three people have been killed in what appears to be a double murder-suicide.

The incident happened at around 10 a.m. ET on Thursday when officers were called to reports of an active shooter in the parking lot of the Canal Lock Apartments, which is located at 110 Center Street. Details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately known.
Ellenville police said three people were confirmed to have died. The suspect is believed to be among those killed, the town's police chief said, but there was no immediate word on his or her identity or a possible motive.
Those killed are two men and a woman, police said.
Ellenville High School, which is just a few blocks from the scene, was put on lockdown as a precaution, but it was lifted about an hour later. The Ellenville Central School District said the middle school and elementary school were also briefly put on lockdown.
