A loud explosion has been heard at the Repertory Theatre on Broad Street in Birmingham, local officials say, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. The building and the surrounding area have been evacuated.

The incident happened around 8:10 p.m. on Tuesday when a loud bang was heard in Birmingham's city centre, according to witnesses. Police later confirmed that an explosion had taken place at the Repertory Theatre on Broad Street.
"All emergency services are currently at Birmingham's Repertory Theatre, Broad St following reports of an explosion," a spokesperson for West Midlands Police said in a statement. "Initial indications are that this was a technical fault in a staff only area."
A large number of emergency services responded to the scene, but there were no immediate reports of casualties. "Everyone has been evacuated are are being kept safe," police said, adding that all roads around the Repertory Theatre and the Library of Birmingham have been closed.
Specific details about the cause of the explosion are not yet known, but police believe it was the result of a technical fault.
