Police and other emergency services in Washington rushed to Hawkins Middle School in Belfair in Mason County after a student with a gun prompted a report of an "active shooter," but no shots were fired and no one was injured.

The incident began on late Wednesday morning when officers were called to a report of an active shooter at Hawkins Middle School, prompting a massive emergency response from units across the area.

Belfair is about 25 miles southwest of Seattle.

Police and school officials later confirmed that a student - an unidentified boy - was taken into custody after he apparently brought a gun to campus. It was not immediately known how old the boy is or where he got the gun.

Roads in the area were closed and the school was put on lockdown as officers rushed to the scene, but a search of the complex found no evidence that shots had been fired. No one at the school was injured during the incident.
