A statement from the U.S. Department of Defense confirmed the identities of the two American victims.

Pelky, 45, of Rio Rancho, New Mexico, was assigned to the U.S. Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Kuhse, 38, of Kalamazoo, Michigan, was assigned to the 3rd Manpower Requirements Squadron at Scott Air Force Base in Illinois.

The accident happened at about 4:15 p.m. local time on Sunday when a British Puma Mk2 helicopter crashed as it attempted to land at Camp Resolute Support near Kabul. A witness told the AP news agency that the helicopter appeared to have struck an observational balloon, causing the balloon's cable to turn around the aircraft's rotor.

In Tuesday’s statement, the Pentagon said the cause of the crash is under investigation.
