The accident happened at about 1 a.m. GMT on Sunday when a car collided with a smoking shelter outside the Streets Nightclub in the centre of Porthcawl, injuring more than a dozen people. Thirteen ambulances were sent to the scene to assist the victims and a major incident was declared by the emergency services.

South Wales Police said 10 people aged between 17 and 43 were taken to hospital by ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries to their lower limbs. Six of those were taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend and four were taken to Morriston Hospital in Swansea. Three additional casualties were also taken to the Princess of Wales Hospital.

A 24-year-old man from Porthcawl, whose name has not been released, has been arrested on suspicion of drink driving and dangerous driving. An 18-year-old woman who was with him in the vehicle is helping police with their enquiries. Both the driver and the passenger have been taken to Bridgend police station.

"This was declared a major incident by the police and ambulance services. All three emergency services were deployed to the incident and work seamlessly to provide a fast and efficient response," said Superintendent Andy Valentine from South Wales Police. "All of the victims, eight male and five female, are now being treated in hospital for their injuries."

South Wales Police is appealing for anyone who witnessed the incident or who saw the manner in which the car, a white ‘S’ registered Audi A4, was being driven prior to the incident to contact the police on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111 and quote incident number 151.
