Dane County Communications said police were called to the mall at 2:50 p.m. on Saturday for reports of shots being fired. The shots were said to have been fired inside the mall between Boston Store and Kirlin's Hallmark, but the motive was not immediately clear. There were reports that some sort of fight or dispute preceded the shooting.
"Witnesses said several young men were involved in a disturbance in the middle of the mall. One pulled out a handgun and fired at least one round. A bullet struck a 19-year-old who was part of the initial dispute," Madison Police said in a press statement. "He was transported to a hospital with a non life-threatening wound. Officers cleared the mall, looking for a suspect, but at this time no suspect has been located."
Reports said that up to a dozen shots were fired during the incident, prompting hundreds of people to flee the complex in fear of an active shooter. It prompted a major emergency response including officers who entered the mall with their weapons drawn, but a police spokesperson said that the scene was secure by 3:30 p.m. One man was taken into custody but is not believed to be the shooter.
The mall said in an alert on its website that it is "temporarily closed due to a safety concern," and it is not yet known when the mall may reopen.
