The explosion happened just after 6:30 p.m. local time on Monday in the area of the airport's eastern gate, which leads to the Baran Hotel. Security forces rushed to the scene after the explosion and cordoned off the area.

The cause of the explosion is believed to have been a car bomb, though reports indicated that it may have been a truck. Witnesses reported seeing casualties, but there was no immediate word from police about how many people had been killed or injured.

Other details were not immediately available. The explosion came just hours after a suicide bomber attacked the airport, causing no casualties.
