North Korea nuclear program

Background: North Korea’s nuclear program

PUBLISHED Tue, January 05, 2016 - 9:23pm EST

If Wednesday's earthquake in North Korea is confirmed to have been caused by a nuclear test, it would be the country's fourth such test since 2006, and follows repeated threats by the regime to do so. (more)

North Korea conducted its first plutonium-fueled nuclear test in October 2006 at the Punggye-ri nuclear test site in North Hamgyong province, and went on to carry out two additional tests at the same site in May 2009 and February 2013, which led to new rounds of UN sanctions that aimed to impede the country's ability to further develop nuclear and ballistic missile programs, as well as its proliferation activities. Since the test in February 2013, the country has repeatedly threatened to carry out a fourth test, though there have been no high-profile threats in recent months. A fourth test is certain to provoke international condemnation and a new round of sanctions.
