Fugitive Salah Abdeslam, who became Europe’s most wanted man after the deadly attacks in Paris, has been arrested after being shot during an operation in the Brussels suburb of Molenbeek, police say. (more)
Shots were heard as several operations began in Molenbeek on late Friday afternoon, resulting in the death of at least one person. Two other people, including Abdeslam, were shot in their legs and taken into custody, police said.
The operation was still continuing just after 6 p.m. local time, with reports that at least one suspect remains holed up inside a residence.
The operation comes just three days after a counter-terrorism raid in the Brussels suburb of Forest, during which four police officers were shot and injured. One suspect was killed and fingerprints belonging to Abdeslam were found at the location, which may have led to Friday’s operation.
