Two of the men, aged 32 and 37, were arrested by West Midlands Counter Terrorism detectives in the Stoke-on-Trent area of Staffordshire while two other men, aged 18 and 24, were arrested at their homes in Birmingham. A fifth man, aged 28, was arrested at another location elsewhere in Birmingham.
"The arrests were intelligence-led and part of an on-going investigation," West Midlands Police said in a brief statement. "Police are searching a number of properties in the Stoke and Birmingham areas as part of the investigation; these searches are on-going."
The statement provided no other information about the nature of the allegations against the men, but it added that an Army Bomb Disposal Team was called in as a precautionary measure while officers search a location in the Lee Bank area of Birmingham.
