The incident began at about 11:40 a.m. France time (10:40 a.m. London time) when Flight 473 declared an emergency as it flew northwest of Toulouse. The aircraft carried out a rapid descent, turned around and entered into a holding pattern.
The pilot of the aircraft, which is an Airbus A320-232 that is capable of carrying up to 186 passengers depending on its configuration, also declared a pan-pan as it prepared for an emergency landing in Toulouse. It landed safely at Toulouse Blagnac Airport at about 12:20 p.m. France time.
There was no immediate word on the exact nature of the emergency.
"The aircraft landed safely after our highly-trained pilots diverted the aircraft to Toulouse as a precaution after a technical issue," an airline spokeswoman said. "The safety and security of our customers is always our top priority and we are sorry for the resulting delay to their travel plans."
"Our engineers are assessing the aircraft," the spokeswoman added.
