UPDATE 2: The incident has no nexus to terrorism, law enforcement sources have told CNN.
UPDATE: Three police officers were injured in the attack, including one who is seriously injured as a result of a 6-inch cut from temple to jaw. The incident began as a call for criminal mischief, but police are not ruling out terrorism, either. "Nothing is off the table," police said when asked about terrorism. The suspect was shot and has been identified as Akram Jouden, who is in critical condition. More to come.
A man has been shot by police after allegedly attacking police officers with a meat cleaver near Penn Station in Midtown Manhattan, officials say. There was no immediate information about the circumstances of the attack.
The incident happened just before 5 p.m. ET on Thursday when a man attacked an NYPD officer in the area of West 32nd Street and Broadway, which is close to the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, and Pennsylvania Station.
The officer suffered a non-life-threatening head injury in the attack, after which the suspect was shot by police, seriously injuring him. A second police officer was also reported to have suffered a non-life-threatening injury, but there were conflicting reports about what caused the injury.
"Officers in midtown Manhattan encountered a man with meat cleaver. Officers discharged several rounds striking the suspect," NYPD spokesman J. Peter Donald said. "One officer was struck with the meat cleaver and transported to an area hospital. The suspect was also hit by an officer."
Other information was not immediately available.
