A tornado warning has been issued for the city of Davenport in Iowa and Moline in Illinois, forecasters say. People in the affected area, which includes Buffalo and Hampton, are urged to seek shelter immediately. (more)
The tornado warning was issued at 10:39 p.m. CT on Thursday when a severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado was located near Rock Island, moving towards the northeast at a speed of 55 miles per hour. The storm is accompanied by penny-size hail.
A tornado warning is in effect for central Rock Island County in northwestern Illinois and southeastern Scott County in east-central Iowa. This includes Moline, Bettendorf, East Moline, Eldridge, Riverdale and Hampton.
Also included in the warning area is Interstate 74 in Iowa between mile markers 1 and 5, Interstate 80 in Iowa between mile markers 294 and 303, and Interstate 280 in Iowa and Illinois between mile markers 5 and 11.
Other locations impacted by the tornado warning are Panorama Park, Rock Island Arsenal, Davenport Municipal Airport, Illiniwek Forest Preserve, Campbells Island, Mississippi Valley Fairgrounds, Pleasant Valley, Fishermans Corner, Credit Island and West Lake Park.
"Take cover now! Move to a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building. Avoid windows," the National Weather Service said. "If you are outdoors, in a mobile home, or in a vehicle, move to the closest substantial shelter and protect yourself from flying debris."
There was no immediate indication that an actual tornado was on the ground, but residents in the warning area are urged to seek shelter until the all clear is given.
