The earthquake, which struck at 1:22 a.m. local time on Saturday, was centered about 12 kilometers west of Kilkis, not far from the border with Macedonia and Bulgaria. It struck at a very shallow depth of about 10 kilometers.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre put the preliminary magnitude of the earthquake at 5.0, while Romania's seismological agency put the magnitude at 5.3. Residents across northern Greece and parts of Macedonia and southwest Bulgaria reported feeling the earthquake.

"It was very strong, it lasted 5 seconds at least," said a resident in Gevgelija in Macedonia, which is northwest of the epicenter. Another resident in Gevgelija added: "There was no sound, but the shaking was strong."

There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties, but we're working to gather additional information.
