Trump says U.S. will withdraw from Trans-Pacific Partnership

PUBLISHED Mon, November 21, 2016 - 6:54pm EST

U.S. President-elect Donald Trump released a video address on Monday, announcing that he will withdraw the country from the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and cancel "job-killing" restrictions on the production of energy. (more)

Trump, speaking in a 2-minute video address released by his transition team, said he was preparing to issue a series of executive orders "to restore our laws and bring back our jobs" as soon as he takes office on January 20.

"On trade, I'm going to issue a notification of intent to withdraw from the Trans-Pacific Partnership, a potential disaster for our country," Trump said. "Instead, we will negotiate fair bilateral trade deals that bring jobs and industry back onto American shores."

Trump added that he will also cancel a number of what he called "job-killing" restrictions on the production of energy, including those that relate to shale energy and clean coal. "I will formulate a rule which says that for every one new regulation, two old regulations must be eliminated," he said.

The president-elect further announced that he will ask the Department of Labor to investigate abuses of visa programs, ask the military to develop a "comprehensive plan" to protect vital infrastructure from cyber attacks, and will impose a five-year lobbying ban for executive officials.

"My agenda will be based on a simple core principle: putting America first," he added.

Monday's statement marks Trump's third public address since he was declared the winner of this month's presidential election. Trump has since faced criticism over a lack of press access, and journalists were not able to ask questions following his brief statement on video.
