Shooting at Hug High School in Reno, at least 1 victim

Police and other emergency services in Nevada are at the scene of an officer-involved shooting at Hug High School in Reno, officials and witnesses say. One person has been shot and the school is currently on code red lockdown. (more)

The incident began just before 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday when two students were fighting near the library at Procter R. Hug High School. One of them is believed to have pulled out a knife, after which an officer shot the student.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the suspect but he was taken to an area hospital for treatment. The identity of the victim, or of the student who was also involved in the fight, have not been released.

A large number of police officers have responded to the scene and the school is now on a code red lockdown. "Reno PD [is] on scene securing the school and scene," a police spokesperson said, providing no other information.

"Hug High School is on a Code Red lockdown. The campus is considered stable and secure, with a heavy police presence. We'll update as the situation develops," the Washoe County School District said in a brief statement.
