The accident happened just before 8:30 a.m. ET on Wednesday when a Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) train slammed into a bumper inside the Atlantic Terminal, which is located at Flatbush Avenue and Atlantic Avenue in Brooklyn.

A large number of emergency services responded to the scene and the New York City Fire Department confirmed that at least 103 people have been injured, though none of the victims are believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries.

Emergency officials initially described the accident as a train derailment, but witnesses at the scene said the train appeared to be traveling faster than usual as it entered the station, after which it crashed into a bumper at the end of the track.

About 600 people were on board the train when the crash happened.

There was no immediate word on what may have caused Wednesday morning's accident, which happened on track 6. The Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) has launched an investigation and is sending investigators to the scene.
