Wilma Estrada, 48, is accused of taking her daughter from New Westminster despite a court order that was issued by the Provincial Court of British Columbia. It is believed that Wilma and Makayla entered the U.S. at 3:23 p.m. on Sunday via the Pacific Highway Border Crossing.

Makayla suffers from 'selective mutism', which is an anxiety disorder in which a person who is normally capable of speech will only speak with specific people she trusts. "Makayla is shy and it is believed that she would not seek assistance from any stranger if she required help," the Washington State Patrol said.

Makayla's mother is alleged to have refused to work with the British Columbia Director of Child, Family, and Community Services to ensure that Makayla is appropriately cared for and that her specific needs are met. Canadian authorities have deemed Wilma incapable of providing a safe environment for Makayla.

Police believe that Wilma and Makayla are traveling in a gray 2003 Toyota Corolla with British Columbia license plate number 228MJT. "Wilma's intentions with Makayla are not known, and police fear for Makayla's safety," the amber alert said.

Makayla is described as a 9-year-old female of Filipino descent with long dark brown hair with bangs and dark brown eyes, standing 4 feet 5 inches tall and weighing 60 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black jacket and dark pants.

Wilma is described as a 48-year-old female of Filipino descent with dark brown hair and dark brown eyes, standing 5 feet 2 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds. She was last seen wearing a white jacket, blue jeans, black rain boots, and carrying a purse.

Anyone who sees Wilma, Makayla, or the suspect vehicle is urged to call 911 immediately, or call the Washington State Patrol in Tacoma at 253-538-3240 if you have any other information that could help investigators.
