Many Delta Air Lines flights across the United States have been grounded as a result of a system-wide computer problem, airline and federal officials say. It is unknown how long the ground stop may last. (more)

The problems began just before 7 p.m. ET on Sunday when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop affecting all Delta departures to domestic destinations. International flights are not affected.

Specific details about the cause were not immediately available, but Delta Air Lines told customers on its official Twitter account that it was experiencing a computer problem. "Our systems are down. The IT department is working to rectify the situation as soon as possible," one message said.

Exceptions to the ground stop can be made if the crew of the plane already has the aircraft's weight and balance, according to the FAA. Planes which have already taken off are not affected by the outage and will continue on with their flights as normal.
