The incident happened at about 8:30 a.m. PT on Monday when officers were called to a traffic collision near the intersection of Mar Vista Street and Colima Road, which is located in the City of Whittier, about 13 miles southeast of Los Angeles.
Lt. John Corina of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said the incident began when a man - believed to be a gang member - rear-ended several cars which were stopped at traffic lights. He then asked one of the drivers to help him push his car around the corner, which they did.
When police officers arrived at the scene a short time later, the suspect unexpectedly opened fire with a semi-automatic handgun, Lt. Corina said at a press briefing. He said two officers of the Whittier Police Department were shot, as well as the suspected shooter.
All three were rushed to area hospitals, where one of the officers succumbed to his injuries. The other officer and the suspect are not believed to have suffered life-threatening injuries. Their identities have not yet been released.
Lt. Corina described the suspect as a Hispanic male in his 20s.
