Breitbart News editor Milo Yiannopoulos resigns

Provocative commentator Milo Yiannopoulos, who came under fire over remarks that suggested support for sexual relationships between adults and underage boys, has resigned from his position at Breitbart News. (more)

"I would be wrong to allow my poor choice of words to detract from my colleagues' important reporting, so today I am resigning from Breitbart, effective immediately," Yiannopoulos said in a written statement. "This decision is mine alone."

Yiannopoulos, who thanked Breitbart for standing with him in the past, added: "When your friends have done right by you, you do right by them. For me, now, that means stepping aside so my colleagues at Breitbart can get back to the great work they do."

The controversy erupted late last week when an old video clip surfaced that showed Yiannopoulos discussing sexual relationships between adult men and young boys. The Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) later canceled his scheduled appearance.

Yiannopoulos, who is expected to hold a press conference on Tuesday afternoon, said in statements over the past few days that he does not support pedophilia.

  Full statement from Milo Yiannopoulos

"Breitbart News has stood by me when others caved. They have allowed me to carry conservative and libertarian ideas to communities that would otherwise never have heard them. They have been a significant factor in my success. I'm grateful for that freedom and for the friendships I forged there.

I would be wrong to allow my poor choice of words to detract from my colleagues' important reporting, so today I am resigning from Breitbart, effective immediately. This decision is mine alone.

When your friends have done right by you, you do right by them. For me, now, that means stepping aside so my colleagues at Breitbart can get back to the great work they do."
