The incident happened at 9:10 p.m. local time on Thursday when a car stopped next to a police van on Champs-Élysées, which is an avenue in the 8th arrondissement of Paris. A gunman exited the car and opened fire at police officers.

A spokesman for the interior ministry said one police officer was killed and two others were seriously injured. A police union initially reported that a second police officer had also died of his injuries, but the ministry denied the report, saying he was still alive. A fourth victim, a bystander, was also injured.

The suspected gunman was shot and killed by other police officers who were also in the area, the interior ministry said. The suspect's identity was not immediately released by authorities but he is believed to have been known to intelligence services.

Hours after the shooting, the Islamic State group (ISIS) claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was carried out by a Belgian national identified as Abu Yusuf al-Baljiki. The Paris prosecutor's office said its anti-terrorism unit has opened an investigation.

A large number of emergency services have responded to the scene, including heavily-armed police officers and snipers. The interior ministry said the entire Champs-Élysées sector had been cordoned off and a number of metro stations and venues have been closed.
