One person has been killed and three others are injured, some of them seriously, after multiple stabbings near Gregory gym on the campus of the University of Texas at Austin (UT Austin). A suspect is in custody.

The incident began at approximately 1:46 p.m. on Monday when medics were called to a scene near Gregory gym on campus, but specific details about what led to the stabbing spree were not immediately available.

The UT Austin Police Department said 2 people were stabbed, including one victim who died at the scene and another who was seriously injured. A third victim was assaulted and also taken to hospital. Austin-Travis County EMS put the total number of victims at 4, including one fatality.

A suspect has been taken into custody, according to the University of Texas, but there was no immediate word on his identity or a possible motive. Photos from the scene of the arrest showed the man with a large knife.

As a result of the stabbings, all classes and events at UT Austin have been canceled for the remainder of the afternoon and evening. "There is currently no ongoing threat on campus," the university said in an email sent to students.
