The incident happened just before 12 p.m. ET on Thursday when a car - apparently being driven at a high rate of speed - drove into pedestrians on a sidewalk. The vehicle then crossed an intersection before coming to a stop.

The New York Fire Department said one person was killed and twenty-two others are injured, some of whom are believed to be in a critical condition. The fatal victim was identified as an 18-year-old woman who died at the scene.

After the crash, the driver fled the vehicle but was quickly taken into custody. The suspect, a 26-year-old man from the Bronx, is reported to have prior arrests for driving under the influence and there is no indication of a link to terrorism.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo have arrived at the scene. President Donald Trump has been made aware of the situation and is continuing to receive updates, the White House said.
