The incident happened on Wednesday night when the child's mother, 36-year-old Alicia Trejo, is accused of breaking into the home of the child's grandmother and assaulting her. Trejo, who does not have custody of the child and who was said to be drunk, then took Marissa and left the area on foot.

It is unknown where they are heading or how they are traveling. "Marissa Babiano (sic) is believed to be in DANGER if not located immediately," New Mexico State Police said in a news release, urging anyone with information to contact police.

Marissa is described as a 5-year-old female with black hair and brown eyes, standing 3 feet tall and weighing about 40 pounds. She was last seen wearing a black dress. Trejo is described as a Native American female with long brown hair and brown eyes, standing 5 feet 1 inch tall and weighing 150 pounds.

Anyone who sees either Marissa or Trejo is urged to call 911 immediately, or call the Belen Police Department at 505-866-2460 if you have any other information that could help investigators in their search.
