North Korea has test-fired another ballistic missile, Japanese and South Korean officials say, just a week after the country carried out a test of a medium-range missile. The latest test appears to have been successful. (more)

The missile was launched at 5:10 a.m. local time on Monday near the eastern port city of Wonsan in Kangwon Province, the South's military said. It flew about 450 kilometers (280 miles) before falling into waters off its eastern coast.

Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said the missile went down in waters of Japan's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), the Kyodo news agency reported. A government spokesman said there were no reports of damage.

U.S. Pacific Command described the projectile as a short-range ballistic missile which was launched near Wonsan Airfield. "The missile was tracked for 6 minutes until it landed in the Sea of Japan. We are working with our Interagency partners on a more detailed assessment," a spokesman said.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in called an emergency meeting of the National Security Council to discuss Monday's missile test. And in Japan, Prime Minister Shinz┼Ź Abe strongly condemned the launch, calling it "intolerable."

U.S. President Donald Trump was briefed about the test, the White House said.

Monday's test comes after months of escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula, fueled by North Korea's missile tests and its advancing nuclear weapons program, as well as U.S. military exercises and statements by U.S. President Donald Trump.

North Korea has carried out a series of missile tests over the past few months. Most importantly, on May 13, North Korea test-fired a newly-developed mid-to-long range ballistic missile which reached an altitude of 2,111 kilometers (1,311 miles) and flew 787 kilometers (489 miles).

North Korea hailed the launch as a major success and said the Hwasong-12 missile was capable of carrying a nuclear warhead. The missile's extreme height suggests it would be capable of reaching the U.S. territory of Guam, a significant development for North Korea's missile technology.
