A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 has struck the Big Island of Hawaii, seismologists say. Shaking has been felt widely across the island. (more)

The earthquake, which struck at 5:01 a.m. local time on Thursday, was centered on the south flank of the Kīlauea Volcano, or 28 miles (45 kilometers) south of Hilo and 21 miles (33 kilometers) southwest of Hawaiian Paradise Park. It struck at a depth of just 4 miles (6.5 kilometers)

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the preliminary magnitude of Thursday's earthquake at 5.3, up from an initial estimate of 5.3.

Residents on the Big Island said the shaking was felt across the island and the shaking woke up many people. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries, and there is no threat of a tsunami, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

"Shock fairly hard and for longer than usual, maybe 7-8 seconds," one resident in Pāhoa told EMSC. Another resident in Hilo said: "It was scary things were falling and you could hear cracking."

We're working to gather more information.

Thursday's tremor is the strong to hit the region since a 5.3-magnitude earthquake struck just off the Big Island on June 5, 2013.
