News summary for Tuesday, June 27, 2017

PUBLISHED Wed, June 28, 2017 - 12:26am EDT

Here's a quick look at the most important news of the last 24 hours.

* Dozens of companies around the world - many of them in Ukraine and Russia - have been hit by a new wave of ransomware. Disruptions were reported at some companies but there were no reports of major incidents. Those affected include Danish shipping company Maersk, Russian oil producer Rosneft, as well as computers at Ukraine's government, banks, power distributor and an airport. The Chernobyl nuclear power plant in Ukraine was forced to switch to manual radiation monitoring.

* A stolen helicopter has opened fire in the Venezuelan capital of Caracas, throwing grenades at the Supreme Court building and firing shots at the Interior Ministry. There were no reports of casualties. President Maduro condemned the attack as a "terrorist act" and said a search for the helicopter is underway.

* Colombia's FARC rebels have given up the last of their weapons, ending decades of conflict. "Goodbye to war. We will continue as a legal and democratic movement using words as our only weapon," the group said. It followed a historic peace deal which was signed with Colombian President Santos last year.

* U.S. Senate Republicans have delayed a vote on their health care bill until after the July 4th recess. It comes after a number of Republicans said they would vote against advancing the bill.

* The social networking website Facebook now has more than 2 billion monthly active users, reaching more than a quarter of the world's population or more than half of all internet users.

* The European Union's antitrust regulator has fined Google a record 2.42 billion euro ($2.74 billion), saying the company abused its market dominance by showing search results which favored its own comparison-shopping service over competitors.
