The incident happened at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday when a large explosion ripped through Richmond Hall, causing major damage on the first and second floors. The blast could be heard and felt across a large area.

"There was an explosion at Richmond Hall. Emergency Personnel are on the scene. Stay out of the area," Murray State University said in an alert to students. Photos from the scene showed a heavily damaged building with debris strewn across the pavement and road.

A large number of emergency services were called to the scene but there were no immediate reports of casualties. One official said the explosion is believed to have been the result of a natural gas leak and emergency crews were working to shut off the gas.
