The incident began around 6 p.m. on Saturday when officers were called to reports of an "active shooter" at the mall, but officials soon confirmed there was no indication of an ongoing incident. A large number of officers are at the scene.

"No active shooter. There was one shell casing found inside the mall and a male was arrested with a gun nearby," NYPD spokesman J. Peter Donald said. "[Police] are searching the mall for any potential victims or suspects."

As of 6:30 p.m., there were no reports of any injuries.

As a result of the shooting, the mall was placed on lockdown and several shoppers said they were taking shelter in stores. Other parts of the mall, including the parking garage, were reportedly being evacuated as officers worked to clear the area.

Kings Plaza Shopping Center, which first opened in 1970, is a shopping center within the Marine Park/Mill Basin section of Brooklyn. It is home to about 120 stores and services.
