At least eight people have been killed after violence erupted at the end of a football match in Senegal's capital of Dakar, local news agencies report. Nearly 50 others have been seriously injured. (more)

The incident happened on Saturday when thousands of people were attending a match between local football clubs Union Sportive Ouakam and Stade de Mbour at the Demba Diop stadium in the country's capital.

Stade de Mbour won the match by scoring a goal in the overtime period, after which violence erupted among football fans, according to the APS news agency. It said fistfights broke out while others threw projectiles, forcing supporters of Stade de Mbour to flee and climb over a wall.

The news agency said a wall collapsed under the weight of those trying to flee and others were caught up in a stampede, causing casualties. Police responded to the scene and fired tear gas in an effort to disperse the clashing crowds.

APS said at least 8 people had been killed while 49 others were taken to area hospitals with serious injuries. It was not immediately clear whether those killed died as a result of violence, the wall collapse or the stampede.
