A moderate earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 has struck southeast Idaho, with shaking felt across the state lines in Wyoming and Utah, seismologists and residents say. It was preceded by a smaller earthquake. (more)

The strongest earthquake, which struck at 5:56 p.m. MT on Saturday, was centered about 12 miles northeast of Georgetown, or 63 miles southeast of Pocatello. It struck at a depth of 6.2 miles, making it a shallow earthquake.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the preliminary magnitude of the earthquake at 5.3. It estimated that more than 3.4 million residents across the region could have felt light shaking from the earthquake.

About a minute prior to the earthquake, the same area was shaken by a smaller earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 4.3. Residents across southern Idaho and parts of Wyoming and Utah reported feeling the earthquakes, but there were no immediate reports of serious damage or injuries.

"Little bit of shaking! But definitely felt it," a resident in Thayne, Wyoming, close to the epicenter, told EMSC. In Garden City, Idaho, a resident said: "Our trailer home moved and it felt about 2 inch roll." A resident in Smithfield, Utah, said the earthquake lasted about 5 or 6 seconds.

Further from the epicenter, a resident in Bear River City, Utah, said the quake "felt like a wave." And in Farr West, Utah, a resident said: "My two dogs were not frightened, but both woke up from napping, lifted their heads and looked around."
