Firefighters and other emergency services in Tennessee are responding to reports of an explosion at the Wacker Chemie AG chemical plant near Charleston in Bradley County, officials and witnesses say. At least one person has been injured.

The incident happened at around 3 p.m. on Thursday when a possible explosion and chemical release occurred at the chemical plant. Thick plumes of white smoke were seen billowing into the air from miles away.

People in the Charleston area were initially urged to shelter in place due to the possibility of toxic fumes, but the order was later lifted. There was no immediate word on what may have been released but authorities say there is no threat to the community.

A 38-year-old man at the plant suffered burns and was taken to hospital.

"Shelter in place is lifted. Resume normal activity. All roads open," the Cleveland / Bradley County Emergency Management Agency said in a brief statement. Earlier, I-75 had been shut down at exits 27 NB and 36 SB.

Schools in the area, including Walker Valley High School, were put on lockdown during the shelter in place. Students who were on a school bus to be taken home have been rerouted to Ocoee Middle School where parents can pick them up. The buses are 1, 3, 22 and 43.

Other information was not immediately available.
