A shooting has been reported at Miami International Airport and one person is believed to have been shot by a police officer, witnesses say. Only few details are currently available but it is not an active shooter incident. (more)

The incident happened just before 9 p.m. on Thursday when some kind of confrontation occurred between a man and a police officer at Terminal J. The man was reportedly shot by the police officer but details about the exact circumstances are not yet available.

There was no immediate word on the condition of the man or his identity, but one report said the suspect is believed to have been armed with a gun. After the shooting, Terminal J was closed and authorities ordered people to leave the area.

"Security incident involving a single suspect and [Miami-Dade Police] has occurred at MIA," the airport said on its Twitter account just after 9 p.m., adding: "Situation under control. Terminal J is temporarily closed."

A video provided by a passenger showed people calmly leaving Terminal J and there did not appear to be panic.

We're working to gather more information.

Thursday's security incident happened during a busy time at the airport as scores of people are trying to find a way out of the path of Hurricane Irma, which is forecast to hit the Miami area on Sunday as a major hurricane.
