‘Active shooter’ alert at Indiana University’s Bloomington campus

Police and other emergency services have responded to Indiana University's Bloomington campus after reports of an active shooter. The campus was put on lockdown as a precaution but there are no known injuries. (more)

The incident began at around 1:30 a.m. ET on Sunday when Indiana University issued an alert for its Bloomington campus. "Police are responding to an Active Shooter incident on the Bloomington campus," it said.

The alert added: "If you are on campus, take safe shelter in the nearest available room. Lock the door if possible. Remain in place until the police or a campus administrator known to you gives the FINAL UPDATE."

One person who was in the area said she heard two apparent gunshots. School officials said shots had been fired near the Henderson Parking Garage after an off-campus robbery, but there were no reports of any injuries.

The robbery suspects fled on foot and were last seen heading to the northwest, the university said. Other details about the robbery and the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available. The lockdown was lifted at around 3 a.m.

"There is no longer an imminent threat to our campus population. But it's a good idea to stay vigilant, in case further alerts are issued," the university said on its Twitter page.
