The incident happened at about 10:20 a.m. ET on Wednesday when police and fire crews were called to a report that two children had been shot at a residence in Dearborn, a city about 7 miles (11 kilometers) west of Detroit.

"Dearborn Police and Fire arrived on scene and began rendering aid to the victims, both three years old who were transported to hospital," said Dan Bartok of the Dearborn Police Department. "A preliminary investigation revealed a toddler in the home accessed a handgun and the weapon discharged."

The victims were initially listed in critical condition but both were upgraded to serious but stable on Thursday. One of the toddlers suffered a shoulder injury and is expected to make a full recovery, while the other suffered an injury to the face.

The shooting happened at an unlicensed day care where a woman was babysitting about 8 children, including her own, though they were not among the injured. Both the woman and her husband were interviewed by police but prosecutors have yet to decide whether criminal charges should be filed.

"This is a tragedy that affects the entire community and we wish the best for the victims involved," Dearborn Police Chief Ronald Haddad said.
