Police and other emergency services in Ohio were called to reports of shots being fired at Wayne High School in Huber Heights, but the sounds were found to have been caused by a fight, officials and witnesses say.

The incident happened at about 9:30 p.m. on Saturday when officers were called to reports of shots being fired and an officer in need of assistance at the high school, where a homecoming dance was taking place.

Authorities said it turned out to have been caused by a fight, during which a student picked up a metal tabletop and slammed it onto the floor, causing a sound that some people mistook for gunfire. No gun was found, according to Huber Heights City Schools.

Details about the exact circumstances of the fight were not immediately available, but no one was reported to have been injured, police said. No arrests had been made and the issue was turned over to school officials to decide whether students should be disciplined.

A large number of emergency services had initially responded to the call, but most were released from the scene a short time later. As of 9:50 p.m., the scene was under control and police said they were not looking for any suspects.

The homecoming dance was canceled early.
