Two people have been found shot dead inside a car in the Dolores Heights neighborhood in San Francisco, local police say. The deaths are believed to be either a murder-suicide or a double suicide. (more)

The incident was first reported at 9:31 a.m. on Saturday when police were called to the area of 21st and Rayburn Street to check on the well-being of two people in a car. Officers made contact with the occupants and discovered that they were suffering from gunshot wounds.

"Police rendered aid and summoned medical assistance, but the victims, an adult male and an adult female were unfortunately pronounced deceased at the scene," the San Francisco Police Department said in a statement.

The identities of the victims were not immediately released.

Police processed the car for several hours and recovered a gun at the scene of the shooting. They also found a child seat in the vehicle, but investigators later developed information which indicates that no child is in danger.

"At this time, there is no indication that a suspect is outstanding or that the neighborhood is at risk," the statement said, which suggests either a murder-suicide or a double suicide. Both the police department's Homicide Detail and the Office of the Medical Examiner are investigating.

Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD Tip Line at (415) 575-4444.
