Police and other emergency services in Sweden are at the scene of a shooting in the town of Trelleborg, officials and witnesses say. Details are limited but at least four people have been taken to hospital. (more)

The incident happened at about 10:30 p.m. local time on Thursday when officers were called to reports of a shooting in Ehrenbuschsgatan, which is a street in the town's center. It is believed that shots were fired at several locations.

A local police spokesman confirmed that at least four injured men were taken to hospitals in Malmö and Lund. Their conditions are currently unknown.

A police spokesman confirmed that several people had been detained for questioning. It was not immediately known what may have been the motive, police said the shooting is not believed to be linked to terrorism. The town has experienced gang violence in the past.

Streets in the area have been cordoned off and a large number of police officers - some of them heavily armed - were at the scene. "A major police operation is underway," local police said, providing no further details.

Aron Tydén, who lives in the area, told the Swedish newspaper Expressen that he heard shots being fired. "I was at home at my computer when I heard a loud bang," he said, adding that he heard more bangs a short time later and saw several people running.
