A woman in southern Somalia has been publicly stoned to death by militants from al-Shabaab after she left her husband and married a second man, a member of the al-Qaeda linked group told journalists on Thursday. (more)

Habiba Ali Isak, a 30-year-old mother of eight children, was killed by stoning on Thursday afternoon in Sakow in the country's southern region. The town, which is about 515 kilometers (320 miles) southwest of the capital Mogadishu, is under the control of al-Shabaab.

The group's governor for the region told the Reuters news agency that Isak was living with her husband and their children until she told him that she had to travel to Mogadishu to visit her relatives. Her husband later found out that Isak had actually gone to another man and married him.

"Her legal husband brought the case to the court. She admitted she illegally married a second husband," the governor said, as quoted by Reuters. "According to the Islamic sharia she was publicly stoned to death this afternoon."

The offending husband had fled, he added.

Al-Shabaab seeks to control Somalia and impose a strict interpretation of Sharia law. The militant group seized most of southern Somalia in the second half of 2006, but it later lost ground and pledged allegiance to al-Qaeda.

Under a strict interpretation of Sharia law, men are allowed to marry up to four women. Women, however, are not allowed to marry more than once under any circumstance.
