A strong earthquake (sismo) with a preliminary magnitude of 5.8 has struck near the cities of Guayaquil and Machala on the coast of Ecuador, with shaking felt as far away as parts of Peru, seismologists and residents say.

The earthquake, which struck at 11:23 p.m. on Friday, was centered near the town of Balao, roughly halfway between the cities of Guayaquil and Machala. It struck at a depth of about 8 kilometers, making it a very shallow earthquake.

Ecuador's Geophysical Institute put the preliminary magnitude of Friday's earthquake at 5.8, but there was no immediate word on damage or casualties. People throughout the region, as far away as Peru, reported feeling the earthquake.

"This was much more extended than the earthquake this morning. It woke us up and when it didn't stop quickly we started to get clothes on to go outside," a resident in Cuenca told EMSC, referring to the 5.2-magnitude earthquake that struck the area earlier on Friday.

Ecuador is located along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an arc of fault lines circling the Pacific Basin that is prone to frequent and large earthquakes. A 7.8-magnitude earthquake struck northwest Ecuador in April 2016, killing more than 670 people and injuring many more.
