Actor and singer David Cassidy, who was widely known for his role as Keith in the 1970s TV show "The Partridge Family," has died after suffering from organ failure. He was 67 years old. (more)

Cassidy died on Tuesday evening while being treated at a hospital in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. He had been taken there last Wednesday and suffered from organ failure, including kidney failure, while waiting for a liver transplant.

"On behalf of the entire Cassidy family, it is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our father, our uncle, and our dear brother, David Cassidy," his family said in a statement. "David died surrounded by those he loved, with joy in his heart and free from the pain that had gripped him for so long."

The family added: "Thank you for the abundance and support you have shown him these many years."

It was not immediately known what led to his organ failure, but Cassidy's health is said to have been failing for months. The actor and singer revealed in February that he was diagnosed with dementia and planned to retire from his career at the end of this year.

Cassidy, who was born in New York in 1950, was well-known for his role as Keith Partridge in the 1970s musical-sitcom "The Partridge Family." His success - both as an actor and a singer - made him one of the most popular teen idols and pop singers of the 1970s.
