The earthquake, which struck at 10:20 p.m. local time on Wednesday, was centered about 30 kilometers (19 miles) east of Chiayi City. It struck at a depth of about 18 kilometers (11 miles), making it a shallow earthquake.

A preliminary report from the Central Weather Bureau put the magnitude of Wednesday's earthquake at 5.5, while the U.S. Geological Survey put the magnitude at 5.1. It was immediately followed by two aftershocks measuring 3.8 and 3.5.

Residents across the region have reported feeling the earthquake, but there was no immediate word on damage or injuries. "Clearly felt on the 8th floor," a resident in Taichung told EMSC, while another resident nearby said the tremors lasted "quite a long time."

Located along the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, Taiwan is at times rattled by moderate to strong earthquakes. A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck central Taiwan in September 1999, killing at least 2,297 people and injuring nearly 9,000 others.

More recently, a 6.4-magnitude earthquake struck southwest Taiwan in February 2016, killing 117 people and injuring more than 500 others.
