A moderate earthquake (deprem) with a preliminary magnitude of 5.1 has struck western Turkey, centered near Mugla and Akyaka, seismologists and residents say. Only few details were immediately available.

The earthquake, which struck at 12:49 a.m. local time on Saturday, was centered about 12 kilometers east of Ula, 20 kilometers southeast of Muğla, and 191 kilometers southeast of İzmir. It struck about 6 kilometers below the surface.

The Kandilli Observatory and Earthquake Research Institute put the preliminary magnitude of Saturday's earthquake at 5.1. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) put the magnitude slightly lower, at 4.9.

Residents across the region reported feeling the earthquake, with many saying they were woken up by the tremors. "It was strong and noisy," one resident told said, while another said the shaking lasted about 6 to 7 seconds. There was no immediate word on damage or casualties.
