The incident began at about 8:30 a.m. on Thursday when deputies were called to reports of an active shooter at the Aztec High School, but specific details about the circumstances of the shooting were not immediately available.

Aztec is a city in San Juan County near the state line with Colorado, about 143 miles (230 kilometers) northwest of Albuquerque.

New Mexico State Police confirmed that a total of three people were killed in the shooting, including the suspected shooter. State police denied an earlier report from Navajo Nation which claimed that as many as 17 people had been shot.

There was no immediate word on the identities of those killed, but the sheriff's office said all involved are believed to be students.

Aztec High School was immediately placed on lockdown after the shooting and officers later began a process to evacuate all of the students. Parents who are going to the school are advised to wait near the church at 516 and Mesa Verde.

As a precaution, all schools in Bloomfield have been put on lockdown, although no incidents have been reported at those locations. "We do have officers located at all of the schools in Bloomfield and they are all on lock down," police said.
