One person has been killed and two others have been injured after knife attacks in Ireland in a town north of Dublin, local officials say. Investigators are looking into terrorism as a possible motive. (more)

The incident happened at around 9 a.m. local time on Wednesday when officers were called to multiple scenes in Dundalk, a town near the border with Northern Ireland and roughly halfway between Dublin and Belfast.

One man, who was later identified as a 24-year-old man from Japan, was pronounced dead at one of the scenes, according to Ireland's national police service Garda. Two other men, both of them Irish, were attacked at two other locations, but there was no immediate word on their conditions.

Authorities described the suspect as an 18-year-old man from Egypt, not Syria as was initially reported. The motive for the attacks, which were seemingly at random, was not immediately known, but police said terrorism was being looked at as a possible motive.

The suspect, whose name was not immediately released, is believed to have been armed with two knives and a fencing pole. Officers were able to disarm him at one of the scenes and took him into custody, after which he was taken to an area police station.

The attacks took place on Avenue Road, Inner Relief Road and Seatown.
