Police and other emergency services in Illinois are investigating a "possible hostage situation" on board a Greyhound bus in Lake County, just north of Chicago. All passengers have now been safely evacuated.

The incident began at about 9:50 p.m. CT on Friday when a Greyhound bus with 45 to 50 passengers was en-route from Milwaukee to Chicago. A passenger who was armed with a gun was said to have hijacked the bus as it drove through Racine County in Wisconsin.

Police vehicles responded and a pursuit began. It came to an end on Interstate 94, near the village of Wadsworth in Lake County, Illinois, after spike strips were deployed. It was then described as a "possible hostage situation," but specific details were not immediately released.

A spokesperson for Greyhound said just before 12:30 a.m. that all the passengers on board the bus had been evacuated. No injuries have been reported. The Illinois State Police confirmed that a suspect had been taken into custody.

Other details were not immediately known.
